The beginning – a dream, a place In 1957 a small idea was born in Mansfield Street, Thornbury – “by the members, for the members”. Italian immigrants at the time felt the need to get out and have a place where they could relive the flavour, warmth and culture of their homeland. Farlan? The name is its soul – Fogolar, meaning “homely atmosphere where the heart finds peace, where no one feels alone”.
The club was not just a structure or a set of walls. It was an emotional ground where people met, talked, clasped hands and said – “we may have the same problems as you, but we are together”.
Change of location – the beginning of a new home
In 1985 the club moved its location, setting up shop on Matisse Street in Thornbury. But the spirit remained the same – familial, welcoming and open to all. When you step in, you feel like you’ve come to a retreat – where people smile, children laugh and the aromas of the land are wafting.
Traditions in the region
The Farlan Club has always respected the traditions of the community. The outside of the club may have changed, but the soul inside has remained the same.
Balleto – Italian folk dance
Every week people dance to traditional Italian music. From adults to children, there’s a smile on their lips and a voice in their hearts – “We are Farlanians”
Bocce and Soccer
Sports build identity and confidence. In sports like bocce, experienced and new members come together to compete, learn and laugh.
Friuli Day Sagre
This annual festival is an occasion when the club is filled with the sunshine of Italian culture – food, song, dance, forgotten recipes and the joy of families. On this day, members of all ages join together and say – “We are Italians, we are Farlanelli”.
The beginning and life of new things – today’s club
Time kept changing and the club also decided to change. Now it is not only a center for cultural programs, but new initiatives also started there:
